The European Union recently banned the sale of new products that have been tested on animals from anywhere in the world, solar executive gifts and premium and the Greens say it's time for New Zealanders to demand the same action.
"Animal testing of cosmetics is both cruel and unnecessary, KD furniture and is fast becoming extinct," the party's animal welfare spokeswoman Mojo Mathers said on Monday.
"A country such as New Zealand that prides itself on taking care of our animals needs to seriously address animal testing and only use it when absolutely necessary, after all, other options have been exhausted."
Ms Mathers says the controversy over using animal testing on party pills shows the extent of public concern.
New legislation will force the party pill makers to prove their products are safe before they can be sold, white wine and it was initially envisaged they could use animal testing.
Following a public outcry, the government gave an assurance that wouldn't happen.
